Out of Context

An art project lasted from 2009 - 9013

After the artist move from her country Saudi Arabia to the UK, she started a series called Out of Context, to express her feelings about living in between two cultures and dealing with all the misconceptions, preconceptions, and stereotypes about women from her country and their image in visual culture. The series is an invitation for an open dialogue about how things have changed in the time of globalisation. The new hybrid culture deprived us from the simple feeling of familiarity with the world around us. Stereotypes started to work against us instead of organising our recognition of the unfamiliar subject. The simple traditional dress, for instance, is not that simple anymore. The media and people’s memories regarding certain images changed the ways we perceive these things. Thus, the original context does not matter anymore, we can only perceive things depending on our perceptual context.
This project is intended to encourage people to fight their desire to make quick judgments, and try to absorb the scene and familiarise themselves with the uncanny. It is an emotional challenge and visual exercise; a call for tolerance towards the new aspects of the globalised world in order to regain our inner peace in a time of uncertainty.
